Fence Dispute Helper

A practical route through common fence disputes, from evidence gathering and early conversation through to mediation, surveyor or legal advice where needed.

Resolution firstThe aim is to solve the problem before it becomes an expensive legal fight.
Before you do anything: photograph the fence, avoid moving or removing a disputed boundary feature, and keep ownership, maintenance responsibility and the legal boundary line as separate questions.
1. What is the main problem?
2. Have you checked the relevant title/deed documents?
3. Is the fence dangerous, unstable or creating a real security risk?
4. Is the property rented?
5. Have you already tried to discuss it with the neighbour?

A sensible resolution ladder

1. Check documents and facts → 2. talk calmly → 3. record the evidence → 4. agree a practical solution → 5. mediation / surveyor → 6. solicitor → 7. formal proceedings only if genuinely necessary.
