Fence Height on Sloping Ground
The answer can differ by planning system. Scottish Government guidance expressly says to measure from the lowest point immediately adjacent to the fence. For England, Wales and Northern Ireland, use the relevant local guidance if the measuring point could change the result.
What to watch for
Sloping sites are exactly the sort of case where a simple “2 metre rule” can be misleading, so treat a borderline measurement cautiously.
This page is general planning information, not a legal determination. If the property is listed, in a conservation area, subject to an Article 4 direction or planning condition, or the site layout is unusual, check the relevant authority before starting work.
